Ground source heat pumps<br />

Ground source heat pumps

Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) tap into the endless source of warmth stored just below ground. At about two metres the earth maintains a constant temperature of around 10°C and it’s this energy that GSHPs harvest, amplify and transfer into homes and offices.

It’s a proven technology that uses the vapour-compression refrigeration process, essentially a fridge working in reverse.

    • 70% lower C02 emissions
    • 4X more efficient than traditional boilers
    • 2 weeks installation time

    Air source heat pumps

Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) harvest warmth from the air (even on the coldest of days) to provide heating and hot water all-year round. It’s the ultimate renewable, a highly effective technology that is three times more efficient than traditional boilers. In technical terms heat pumps utilise the vapour-compression refrigeration process – put simply they work in the opposite way to a fridge.

      Heat Pump Installation FAQs

What is included in the free, no-obligation quote?

      • A brand new heat pump sized specifically for your home’s heating needs
      • A new heat pump-compatible water cylinder
      • New smart controls compatible with your heating system
      • All necessary plumbing and electrical equipment for installation
      • Labour for plumbing and electrical installation
      • A 7-year warranty on the heat pump
      • A 2-year warranty on all other parts
      • A 2-year warranty on labour and workmanship
      • £7,500 grant through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme*
      • Terms & Conditions apply; labour provided based on standard installation

What is not included in the quote?

Our quote covers all the essential elements for installing your new heat pump and heat pump hot water cylinder. However, the cost for radiators is not included because we need to assess your property’s specific requirements. Depending on the circumstances, additional services may be needed, such as locating the internal equipment in a loft space or positioning the air source heat pump at a distance from the property.

How much does a heat pump installation cost?

The cost depends on the size and demands of your property. On average, our quotes range from £4,000 to £6,000 when factoring in the £7,500 grant from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

How does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme work?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant designed to assist with the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating systems with a heat pump. The government provides a £7,500 grant for both air and ground source heat pumps. We will deduct this grant directly from your heat pump quote, so you only need to pay the net amount.*

What if I don't have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)?

If you don’t have an EPC or need a new one, we can arrange this for you at a cost starting from £75 plus VAT.

What does my EPC need to show?

If your EPC shows any recommendations that haven’t been completed yet, you will need to have that work done to be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant.

      Are self-build properties eligible?

Your self-build property is eligible if you are building it yourself or you paid a builder to construct it, and it has never been owned by a business or organization.

Will the installation be eligible for a 0% VAT rate?

All residential installations, including radiator upgrades and any other items related to the installation of your air source heat pump, qualify for zero VAT. You can find more information on the GOV.UK website under Energy-saving materials and heating equipment (VAT Notice 708/6).

Do heat pumps work in very cold weather?

Heat pumps are effective in colder temperatures because they extract heat from the surroundings, even in freezing conditions. They achieve this through a refrigeration cycle that allows them to absorb heat from the cold air or ground outside and bring it indoors. The refrigerant in the heat pump system changes state, evaporating at low temperatures and pressures to draw in heat from the outdoor environment. Even in extremely cold weather, the heat pump system can generate a significant amount of heat energy by compressing and heating the refrigerant, making it suitable for keeping your home warm.

How long does the installation take?

Typically, the installation process takes 5 days. If additional radiators are required, it may take an additional 5 days.

      Do heat pumps need servicing?

Servicing is required to keep your heat pump running smoothly and efficiently. You’ll need to make sure they’re checked annually, along with your hot water cylinder for your warranty to be valid. See our servicing packages.

What brands of heat pumps do you install?

We are accredited with Vaillant, Mitsubishi, and Samsung. All of our installations come with a 5-7 year warranty on the products.

Is my home's insulation suitable for an air source heat pump (ASHP)?

Insulation plays a vital role in maintaining an efficient heating system. Most homes in the UK have decent insulation, particularly those with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D or higher. You can check your home’s EPC rating on the GOV.UK website. It is essential to ensure your home is adequately insulated before considering other options.

Do I have enough space for the indoor equipment and hot water cylinder?

To accommodate the indoor equipment and hot water cylinder, you will need a cupboard height of at least 2 meters, and the cupboard floor area should be a minimum of 0.8 meters x 0.8 meters.

      Will I need new radiators?

Heat pumps operate at lower temperatures than regular gas boilers, which makes them more eco-friendly and cost-effective. However, this may require larger or additional radiators to effectively heat your home. Our survey team will assess your needs during the home survey and recommend any necessary radiator upgrades. Additionally, heat pumps work well with wet underfloor heating systems.

Do you install new radiators or underfloor heating?

If radiator upgrades are necessary, we can install them as part of the heat pump installation. We also offer underfloor heating installation.

      What about running costs?

The new generation of heat pumps can provide similar temperature water to gas boilers but are most efficient when operated at lower temperatures. At these lower temperatures, a heat pump can be up to 5 times more efficient than a gas boiler. We will provide an estimated running cost based on your chosen design temperature in your report.

      Do I need planning permission?

Most heat pump installations can be done without planning permission under “permitted development.” However, there are certain situations where you may need to consult or seek planning permission from your Local Planning Authority (LPA). These situations include placing the heat pump within 1 meter of the property’s boundary, potential noise issues to neighbouring properties, having multiple air source heat pumps or air conditioning units, or if your property is located in a World Heritage Site, conservation area, or is a Listed Building. We will inform you if your installation requires planning permission from your LPA. Please note that we are unable to submit planning applications on your behalf.

Do heat pumps work with existing smallbore pipework?

Yes, you don’t have to worry about upgrading your pipework. The installation of a buffer vessel on the system allows the heat pump to operate efficiently.

Reward schemes & grants for heat pumps

Since Barclays began offering their customers up to £2000 to make energy efficient improvements to their home in January 2023 as part of its Greener Home Reward scheme, now more banks are doing the same.

Halifax is now providing a “Greener Living Reward” and Lloyds an “Eco Home Reward” for homes installing ground source or air source heat pumps. Similar to the Barclays scheme, both Halifax and Lloyds are offering an incentive:

        • £1,000 towards an air or ground source heat pump
        • Plus £5,000 – £6,000 with a government grant, if you live in England or Wales

There are more banks and building societies starting to offer similar rewards. There are some restrictions to be aware of but we are here to help. Don’t forget, there is also 0% VAT on heat pumps! Get in touch with us to find out more about our heat pump installations in and around Cambridgeshire.

Is my property suitable for a heat pump?

Most properties are suitable for heat pump installations. While ground-source heat pumps require sufficient garden or land to accommodate the underground pipework, air-source heat pumps require less space and look much like an air-conditioning unit as they are installed on an outside wall of the home.

Infinite Heating & Energy are experts in advising on the suitability and funding options for air source heat pumps for all kinds of properties – homes and offices – and then designing, installing and commissioning the system. We can also service all heating systems for full peace of mind.

All our installations are designed, supplied and commissioned in accordance with the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), ensuring that our domestic customers are eligible for the Renewable Heat Initiative. Read more about our Funding Options here.
